- Brick and Mortar's Biannual Poetry Contest - Contest is open to both experienced and emerging poets. First place: $1,000; Second: $250; Third: $100. Minimum entry fee: $15 (for three poems). Deadline: January 1, 2004.
- Bridport Prize - An international creative writing competition for poetry (under 42 lines) and short stories (under 5,000 words). Prize money totals ten thousand pounds. Entry fee: Six pounds. Deadline: June 30, each year.
- Cambridge Poetry Awards - Dedicated to the promotion of poetry, the Cambridge Center for Adult Education offers Annual awards for performance and written poetry, to the poets of Massachusetts.
- Cherry Grove Collections - Offers two contests annually, closing March 15 and June 15, respectively. Both seek original full-length (minimum: 48 pages) manuscripts. Reading fee: $20. Prizes in each case: $1,000, plus publication.
- Colorado Review Poetry Contest - An annual contest for a book-length collection of poems, ranging from forty to one hundred manuscript pages. Prize is $1,500, plus publication. Closing date: mid-January. Sponsored by the University of Colorado.
- Comstock Review Annual Poetry Contest - Original, unpublished poems are sought. Maximum length: 40 lines. Entry fee: $3 per poem. Prize pool: $1,350. Deadline: July 1. Selected poems will be published.
- Cross Keys Press Annual Poetry Contest - Offers cash prizes for original poems on any theme, up to sixty lines in length. Deadline: July 31.
- Cross Way Publications Poetry Contest - Closing December 30, this semi-annual contest is open to all Christian poets. All forms of poetry are accepted. Entry fee: $3 per poem (no more than a single page in length). Prize money totals $95.
- Dog River Publishing - Offers a romantic poetry contest, closing July 6, 2003. Entries must be lodged electronically. $2 entry fee per poem. Extremely modest cash prizes.
- Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Prizes - Poetry prizes from $1,000 to $25,000 will be awarded for heartfelt lyric poems celebrating the spirit of life. Deadline: Dec. 10th 2004. Entry fee: $10. Open only to unpublished poets under the age of 40.

- First Writer Poetry Competition - Annual contest offers $200 as First Prize for a poem in any style and on any subject. Length: under 30 lines. Minimum entry fee: 3 pounds. Deadline: October 1, 2003.
- Foley Poetry Contest at America Magazine - America magazine sponsors annually the Foley Poetry Award with a $1,000 prize. Submit only one poem of 30 lines or fewer. Poems must arrive between January 1 and the third Friday of April. Free entry. No email submissions.
- Frances Locke Memorial Poetry Award - Annual contest offers a $1,000 cash award, plus publication, for an imaginative work. Reading fee: $10. Deadline: June 15.
- Georgia Poetry Society Contests - Offers a number of contests throughout the year, international in scope, for short poems.
- Griffin Poetry Prize - Griffin Poetry Prizes, worth C$40,000 each, are annual international and Canadian literary awards for poetry written or translated into English. Publishers only are invited to submit collections of poetry in traditional print format each calendar year.

- The Joan Leiman Jacobson Poetry Prizes - Annual contest, co-sponsored by the 92nd Street Y Unterberg Poetry Center and The Nation magazine, offered to poets who have not yet published a book of poems. Entry fee: $5. Deadline: January 17.
- Jolly Roger Classical Poetry Contest - Traditional poetry is favored. Awards include a classic Captain Ahab bust. Entry fee: $10. Deadline: May 30, 2003.
- Juniper Prize for Poetry Contest - Original manuscripts of at least fifty pages are sought by The University of Massachusetts Press which will publish the winning collection of original poetry. Entry fee: $15. Deadline: September 30, 2003.
- The Kingsley Tufts Poetry Awards - An annual award of $100,000 is offered for a published book of original poetry by a U.S. citizen or legal resident alien.
- Lois Cranston Memorial Poetry Prize - Annual contest. Prize: Publication and $300. Deadline: May 31, 2005. There is a $15 per entry fee. No more than six manuscript pages. Women writers only.
- Lost Horse Press - The Idaho Prize is open to U.S. authors only. It offers $1200 plus publication for a book-length poetry manuscript of 48 pages or more. Reading fee: $20. Deadline: May 15, 2005.

- Margaret Reid Poetry Prize for Traditional Verse - Annual awards totaling $2,000 (including a $1,000 First Prize) are made for poems in traditional verse forms. Any variations on metrical, rhyming and/or formal poems are eligible. The judge's interpretation of "traditional" is loose rather than strict. - Odes of March Poetry Contest - Annual contest, closing in March, offers a $300 cash prize.
- Ohio State University Press Poetry Contest - A $2,000 poetry contest for book-length manuscripts (at least 48 pages), sponsored by the Ohio State University's literary magazine, "The Journal". Reading fee: $25. Entries must be postmarked during the month of September.
- OnceWritten Poetry Contest - Seeks original, unpublished verse for website publication. No maximum word or line length. Two contests per year with entry fee and cash prizes.
- Pennsylvania Poetry Society Contests - Comprises seventeen open categories, plus four restricted to PPS members. Modest entry fees. Cash Prizes vary from $10 to $100. All winning poems are published. Deadline: January 15, 2004.
- Penumbra Poetry and Haiku Contest - Sponsored by the Tallahassee Writers' Association, this annual poetry contest offers prize money totaling $460. Deadline: June 30. Entry fees: $5 for poems up to 50 lines in length; $3 for haiku.
- People Before Profits Poetry Prize - An annual prize for an original poem on a "people before profits" theme. $10 entry fee. $200 prize. Deadline: March 1.
- The Poetic Link - An interactive data base, publishing submitted works and critiques and offering monthly prizes for best poet and best critiquer. Includes membership form and contest rules.

- Poetry London - One of Britain's leading poetry magazines, features original poems, and reviews, and sponsors a rewarding annual contest for unpublished poems, less than 80 lines in length. Winners have been announced for 2003 contest.
- Ragged Raven's International Poetry Competition - Annual contest seeks poems of any length and on any subject. Prize money totals 450 pounds. Entry fee: 3 pounds. Closing date: October 31, 2003.
- Reuben Rose Annual Poetry Competition - Established to give a voice to writers of English poetry in Israel, this competition seeks poems on general themes, not more than forty lines in length. Entry fee: $5. Deadline: October 7, 2003.
- Revelever Publications Chapbook Contest 2004 - 2nd Annual Chapbook Contest (30-40 pages). First place wins $500 plus 25 free chapbooks. Lesser prizes for 2nd and 3rd place. Deadline: December 15. Entry fee: $10.
- Slipstream Press Poetry Contest - An annual poetry chapbook contest, worth $1,000, seeking up to forty pages of poetry in any style, format or theme. Entry fee: $15. Deadline: December 1, each year.

- Swift Satire Poetry Competition - Submissions are invited for a satirical poem, in the spirit and style of Swift, on a topic of social/political interest. First Prize: Euro 1,000. Closing Date: July 24, 2004.

- Thomas Merton Poetry of the Sacred Contest - Seeks unpublished verse, no longer than 100 lines. Judged on literary excellence, spiritual tenor and human authenticity. Prize money totals $650. No entry fee. Deadline: December 31.
- Tom Howard Poetry Contest - Annual contest, closing September 30, 2005, seeks original poems in any style, on any theme, and of any length. Published verse and simultaneous submissions are okay. Prize money totals $2,000, including a First Prize of $1,000. All prizewinners also receive a free copy of the Anthology of winning entries. Entry fee is $5 for every 25 lines.
- Voices Network - Features quarterly poetry competitions, with no entry fees. Open to all, though entries from children are judged by less strict criteria. Cash prizes total $175.
